INDUSTRIALIZED CELESTIAL BRUTES
Gydunians hail from the planet Gydunia in the Vlagorix system. Descendants of the savage yet intelligent race known as trulls, the modern Gydunians are heavily industrialised and have developed their world into an economic hub. Much of their wealth was gained through exploiting the mineral rich planet of Vlagorix IV as well as their own populace.
Gydunian society is aggressive and dominated by the accumulation of wealth. The pursuit of riches has led Gydunians to integrate themselves deeply into the Celestial Democracy, even going so far as to all but erase their own language in favour of the Celestial Standard spoken by other species in the Democracy.
Gydunians follow a strict social hierarchy with those born on Gydunia, Pures, considered to have pure genes. Pures make up the ruling classes and industrial leaders. Their wealth allows them access to gaudy and opulent dress including furs and silks. It is impossible for those not born on Gydunia to climb to this level.
Below them is a quasi middle class of less-wealthy Gydunia-born and the wealthiest Vlagorix-born. Starship captains and industrial managers are to be found at this level. In their desperation to appear better than their peers they dress themselves in whatever finery they can afford.
The lower class of Gydunians is occupied by Vlagorix-born workers known as Vlags. Seen as closer to Trulls genetically, they are looked down upon by their more “pure” brothers and sisters. This prejudice is based on claims of higher amounts of trull DNA amongst Vlags but no such genetic distinction has been proven conclusively. The notion of genetic purity is perpetuated in order to maintain the status quo. They wear mostly utilitarian clothing assigned to them by corporations and this has led them to focus on personalisation of industrial garments and a rejection of anything seen as too flashy.
At the bottom of the pile are Hexians. As cousins of Gydunians they are seen as less intelligent and good only for manual labour, though some members of the species start their own businesses, mostly catering to their brethren. They have limited interest in wealth or fashion and are content to wear whatever is given to them.
Gydunian society is ruled by a board of wealthy elites. Gydunians are not elected and instead bid for seats at the end of each parliamentary cycle. This leads to board members imposing taxes and fines on potential rivals in order to hold onto power. There is limited involvement in the private lives of Gydunians or business but there are indications that the economy is not as free as portrayed.
As with most of the LovAnaverse, music is a key element of Gydunian society. Gydunia’s contribution to the galactic music scene is known as blurdskrem, the term a corruption of “blood scream” that was coined upon its introduction to the galaxy. Prior to Gydunia’s discovery by the wider galaxy, blurdskrerm had been a mixture of drums and wind instruments, predominately horns. The introduction of the guitar by other species revolutionised the genre, creating the blurdskrerm known today.
Possibly the most immediately noticeable features of Gydunians are the markings around their eyes. Markings typically indicate one’s membership of a powerful dynasty, employer or place of birth. Most markings are simple affairs easily identifiable by Gydunians but those of higher status, such as a powerful industrial family, will have more intricate designs.
